Ibrahim Rugova

-( December 2, 1944 – January 21, 2006 )-

Ibrahim Rugova, the pacifist leader of Kosovo's Albanians, was born in 1944. The years that followed were to shape his whole outlook on life. Just after the war his father and grandfather were executed by Yugoslav communists who were recapturing the province from the then retreating Germans.  Rugova grew up during years of harsh repression. Following the war, Kosovo was run by mostly Serb communists who ran the province on a tight leash.

Nevertheless Ibrahim Rugova was able to prosper and he eventually went to Paris where he studied linguistics at the Sorbonne. He then became a professor of Albanian literature and a writer.
Like almost every single other leader in the former Yugoslavia, Rugova was a member of its old communist party. He was expelled after joining others in demanding changes to Serbia's constitution.
 Building a political movement
With the formal end of one party rule in Serbia Rugova was elected to head the first non-communist party in Kosovo, the Democratic League of Kosova ( *see notes below), the LDK.
The LDK was founded just after Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic had abolished Kosovo's autonomy and at a time of great political ferment. Over the next few years though the Yugoslav crisis, which had begun in Kosovo was to shift northwards. By 1991 the war which was to destroy the old federal republic had begun.
 Change of strategy
At this point the LDK, which had until then been demanding that Kosovo become a full Yugoslav republic now opted for independence. At that point there were believed to be some 1.7 million Albanians in Kosovo as against 200,000 Serbs.
As the Croats and then Bosnia's Muslims took on the Serbs, some Kosovo Albanians argued that they should "open a southern front" to win their own freedom.
Rugova argued that this would be an appalling mistake. After hundreds of thousands of people had been driven from their homes in Croatia and Bosnia, he feared the same could happen to Kosovo's Albanian population.
 Parallel administration
Under Rugova's guidance then, the LDK and other Kosovo Albanian parties pioneered a unique experiment. They declared independence and began setting up parallel structures of government, health care and education.
Rugova was elected president in semi-underground elections while a "government-in-exile" shuttled between Germany, Switzerland, Albania and Macedonia.

The main purpose of this government was to raise taxes amongst the large Kosovo Albanian community working abroad and to use this money to finance education and other services.
Teachers, doctors and others were available in large numbers ever since they had been sacked or resigned from their jobs after Mr Milosevic's clampdown in 1989.
It is widely believed that the Serbs more or less permitted Mr Rugova's activities as he was immensely popular and if Albanians did not have him to look to for guidance then they would search for leadership amongst other more hardline candidates.
 Dayton accord shatters consensus
Albanians who had followed Rugova through the difficult years of repression and harassment were shocked that the 1995 accord, which ended the war in Bosnia, did not deal with Kosovo. It became increasingly clear that western countries would not support its demand for independence.
From that time on Rugova's position came under increasing scrutiny. Some began to argue that their leader's pacifism was tantamount to passivity. Quarrels with the government-in-exile lead to a cut off of funds from abroad.
 Leadership threatened
When the Kosovo Liberation Army began to emerge some two years ago Rugova argued that it was a Serbian police trick designed to discredit his policies.
The increasing prominence of the KLA showed this was not the case.
Mr Rugova's trademark is a silk scarf that he wears wherever he goes.
With the launch of the Nato air campaign and the mass exodus of Kosovo Albanians it is now unclear just how popular he remains.
Some analysts believe that if Mr Rugova could make a compromise deal with the Serbs, the vast majority of Albanians who are now armed would lay down their guns and follow his lead.
However he lost support when he was shown on Serbian television holding talks with President Slobodan Milosevic after the Nato bombing campaign began.
He also signed an agreement with Belgrade at the end of March paving the way for more peace talks on the province.
With his release by the Yugoslav authorities and arrival in Italy he clearly intends to play a role in the search for peace in Kosovo.
Whether it is a significant one remains to be seen.
 Notes
(*1) Kosova is the Albanian name for the province. The word 'League' was chosen specifically to make reference to the League of Prizren, the first Albanian nationalist movement which was founded in 1878.

Fawzia

-Queen of Iran-

One of the most beautiful ladies of the last century was of Albanian stock. She had some French and Circassian blood too, but her ancestry was predominantly Albanian. Her name was Fawzia; she was the sister of the last king of Egypt, King Farouk.

Her paternal ancestor was, as I wrote above, the Albanian warrior Mehmed Ali Pascha who established the Egyptian independence and became its leader. He was born in Kavala, Greece, but was originally from Zemblak, Korca. This same man spoke only Albanian it was said, possible Turkish too. His son was Ibrahim Pascha; his son was Ismail, who had another son called Fuat. Fuat's daughter was Fewzia, and his son and heir, Farouk(he had other children as well). Her mother, called Nazli Sabri, was the daughter of Abdu'r-Rahman Pasha Sabri, who former minister of Agriculture and mayor of Cairo; he was of Albanian ancestry as well. His wife was Tefika Kahnum, who was mixed French-Albanian.

Fawzia was later married to the Shah of Iran; Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. He dirvorced her later, however, due to her not giving birth to any son. Nevertheless, she reached great fame in the world through her beauty and acquired the nick-name "Asian Venus" -- that is what Cecil Beaton calls her, saying also that she had "a perfect heart-shaped face and strangely pale but piercing blue eyes".

I replied that I was a slave of the Arnaut Mami (for I knew as a certainty that he was a very great friend of his),

Miguel Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote. He was captured by the pirate Arnaut Mami in September of 1575, and the Trinitarian responsible for his release five years later in 1580 was Juan Gil.(6) It is thought that Cervantes was buried in a Trinitarian habit.(7)

Stefi Gjine
-growing tennis player-

Gjine draws on athletic genes

REGINA (CP) - Growing up in an athletic family, it was natural for Stefi Gjine to be successful in sports, especially tennis.

The tennis phenom from North Vancouver, B.C., grew up with the strong support of her parents, who were elite athletes in Albania. Now at only 15-years-old, she has 124 trophies in her collection.

"I'm telling you I love tennis," Gjine said. "I used to play the under-14, under-16 and under-18 (in B.C.) and I won all three of them. From that tournament on, they wouldn't let me play all three."

Since she was 11, Gjine has been winning the province's top two events. She stepped onto the national stage at her first Canada Summer Games this week.

(...)

Gjine's dad says he's really glad both Stefi and her 11-year-old sister Jenny inherited the athletic gene.

Shefki Kuqi
- Famous finnish footballer-

Shefki Kuqi (born November 10, 1976 in Kosovo) is a Finnish footballer who currently plays for Blackburn Rovers F.C. in the English Premiership. He is a big and strong striker - nicknamed The Kosovar Ox - who is known more for his determination than technical skill. Shefki is the elder brother of Njazi Kuqi, who plays for Birmingham City.

Kuqi started his playing career with MP Mikkeli, shortly after emigrating to Finland. He also played for HJK Helsinki and FC Jokerit – with whom he was the Veikkausliiga top scorer in 2000 – in Finland, before joining Stockport County in January 2001. Kuqi then had a spell at Sheffield Wednesday before joining Ipswich Town. Kuqi's 20 goals in the Championship for Ipswich in the 2004-05 season earned him a move to the Premiership with Blackburn. In the current season alone, Kuqi has notched up 7 goals and 7 assists thus far.

Kuqi has received some media attention - especially from Match of the Day - for his spectacular, and unusual, goal celebration: the swan dive (or flying Finn). Where Kuqi jumps forward with both arms out, in what could be described as an attempt to glide like a bird, before crashing to the ground. Although, it looks like a celebration which may cause injury Kuqi has been reported to have said it does not hurt him.

Kuqi made his debut for the Finnish national team on August 18, 1999 against Belgium. He is a regular squad member of the team.

-Writer-

Good to Know
Some fun factoids from our interview with Perrotta:

"My mother is Albanian."

"I don't eat eggs."

"My dog lived to the ripe old age of 18."

source - biography

Tom Perrotta did not take well to being a parent. "I had gone to great lengths to invent myself as somebody who had a certain level of coolness," he told Terry Gross, in a 2004 interview for NPR's Fresh Air, "and parenthood is about the least cool role you can take on. For anybody who has any sort of bohemian leanings or aspirations or self-delusions, parenthood is a jolt to the very fiber of your being."
